To unlockHow can you learn Brazilian Portuguese and feel confident using it in real life? Whether you are planning a trip, connecting with people close to you or moving abroad, start with phrases you will actually use. With Loecsen, you can start for free: listen, begin speaking and gradually build your own conversations.
Easy to start, with more to explore, the method lets you learn at your own pace. Audio, images and exercises help you practise, while explanatory notes clarify grammar, differences between words and when to use them. Discover the course that fits what you want to say.
For Brazil, explore Independent in 6 months. The First contact course uses European Portuguese.
Learn Brazilian Portuguese to understand and speak in everyday life
Start with expressions you need: listen, repeat them aloud, then recall them without looking at the translation. Review them over the following days and use them in short exchanges. A first goal, such as introducing yourself or asking for information, gives you somewhere to start.
Loecsen’s online courses combine useful phrases, English translations, audio and progressive exercises. You can begin for free, work at your own pace and gradually expand what you can understand and say.
Which course fits your goal?
| Your goal | The course | What you will practise |
|---|---|---|
| Get started or prepare for a trip | First contact | Your first exchanges: greetings, introductions, getting around, ordering and asking for help. European Portuguese (Portugal). |
| Understand more and build your own sentences | Independent in 6 months | Vocabulary, sentence patterns and everyday situations to expand what you can express. Brazilian Portuguese. |
First contact practises the basics and communication situations associated with A1. Independent in 6 months aims for progress towards A2 and some B1 skills. These are learning goals: your progress depends on your starting point, practice and opportunities to use the language. The course name gives you a direction, without guaranteeing a level in six months.
If your plans involve Brazil, you can choose the Brazilian course directly. You do not need to start with European Portuguese. Use the programme and opening lessons to find your starting point.
How to listen, remember and start speaking
Recognising a sentence on the page is a first step. Recalling it when you need it takes practice. Loecsen works with complete expressions in real situations, supported by translations and recordings.
- Listen and understand. Connect the phrase with its meaning and a situation where you could use it.
- Repeat aloud. Listen again and practise following the recording’s rhythm.
- Recall without looking. Try saying the phrase from its translation or an imagined situation, then check.
- Revisit difficulties. Super Memory helps you practise the words and expressions you still find challenging.
- Review over time. Spaced repetition brings material back for review to help you retain it.
Practise in a way that suits you
To work on speaking, focus on listening and repetition and use speech recognition to practise saying the expressions. If you prefer to read and observe, use the images and explanatory notes, then write or rephrase a few sentences. You can combine these approaches and change your focus between sessions.
Understand what you say and when to use it
Explanatory notes explore grammar, word origins, differences between similar terms and the situations in which to use them, with cultural context where helpful. You can explore further from your first lessons: look up an explanation when a phrase raises a question, then return to practice. A simple start leaves room for curiosity.
A few expressions for your first conversations
| To… | Expression | Meaning in English |
|---|---|---|
| Say hello | Olá | Hello |
| Thank someone | Obrigado / Obrigada | Thank you |
| Explain a difficulty | Não entendo | I don’t understand |
| Ask someone to repeat | Você pode repetir, por favor? | Could you repeat that, please? |
| Ask for help | Você pode me ajudar? | Can you help me? |
| Order | Um café, por favor | A coffee, please |
Your first reference points for speaking Portuguese in Brazil
Words such as “importante” and “possível” may look familiar, but learn their pronunciation with the audio. Listen closely to the nasal sound in “não”, “no”: it is not an ordinary vowel followed by a separate final n.
“Você pode me ajudar?” means “Can you help me?”. Você is widely used in Brazil, though forms of address vary by region and situation. Learn the whole request and use it as a pattern for other questions.
“Estou aprendendo português” means “I’m learning Portuguese”. The construction with estou and a gerund is common in Brazil. Portuguese nouns also have grammatical gender: learning “o café” and “a água” with their articles gives you useful information from the start.
Brazilian or European Portuguese: choose for your plans
Independent in 6 months focuses on Brazilian Portuguese; First contact uses European Portuguese as its reference. The varieties share much of their grammar and vocabulary, with differences in sounds, constructions and everyday usage.
A train is commonly “trem” in Brazil and “comboio” in Portugal. Breakfast is “café da manhã” in Brazil and “pequeno-almoço” in Portugal. If you are preparing to travel or live in Brazil, focus on the Brazilian course’s recordings and expressions.
How can you learn with a few minutes a day?
Choose a situation and a small group of phrases. Listen, repeat, then try to recall them without looking. Finish with the exercises and revisit difficulties. Start your next session with reviews before adding new material.
Five to fifteen minutes can be enough for a short session. This is a starting routine to adapt to your goal. To develop freer conversation, gradually add other opportunities to listen and speak with people.
Check your progress the next day: can you understand an expression when you hear it, recall it for a situation and change one part? If you get stuck, revisit that part. On lower-energy days, return to a few familiar phrases rather than adding more material.
Frequently asked questions before you start
Can I start for free?
Yes. First contact lets you practise for free with lessons, online audio, quizzes and Super Memory. Free access has usage limits. Paid options add benefits such as MP3 and PDF downloads and removing advertisements; check the offer terms for the applicable benefits and limits.
Do I need to learn all the grammar before speaking?
No. Start with useful phrases and use the explanations to understand how they are built. Then try changing one part to say something about yourself. Grammar helps you reuse what you learn.
Can I learn independently online?
You can follow the lessons and exercises on your own. For more spontaneous conversation, add real exchanges with someone you know, while travelling or with a conversation partner. Exercises prepare you to speak; conversations also teach you to respond to the unexpected.
