Occitan Vocabulary

I. Origin of Occitan Vocabulary

Occitan is a Romance language spoken primarily in southern France, as well as in parts of Italy and Spain. Occitan vocabulary is primarily of Latin origin, but it has also been influenced by other languages such as Gallic, Aquitanian and Ligurian. The Occitan language is rich in terms related to nature, agriculture, medieval culture and the poetry of the troubadours.

II. Special sounds

Occitan has a distinct phonology with sounds that may be different from those found in other Romance languages. Among the most notable Occitan consonants are "ç" (s) and "j" (ʒ). Occitan also uses diphthongs, which are combinations of two vowels pronounced in a single syllable. The tonic accent in Occitan is usually placed on the first syllable of words.

III. Common Use Situations

Occitan is spoken by about 1.5 million people worldwide, primarily in southern France, where it is also known as the langue d'oc. Common uses of Occitan include daily communication, business, tourism, literature, poetry, music and visual arts. Occitans are proud of their language and appreciate the efforts of visitors to learn a few words and phrases in Occitan.

IV. Using audio to learn Occitan vocabulary

Audio can help improve your pronunciation and listening comprehension. Listening to native speakers of Occitan pronounce words and phrases can help you understand how the sounds of the language are produced and how words are linked together in natural speech. In addition, learning Occitan vocabulary with audio can help you learn idioms and common phrases used in specific contexts. Audio can be used as a convenient way to study Occitan vocabulary while on the go.

V. Some good resources for immersing yourself in Occitan culture

Films:

  • La Fille du puisatier (2011) - Directed by Daniel Auteuil, this film is based on the work of Marcel Pagnol and highlights the Occitan language.
  • Le Papet (1986) - Directed by Claude Berri, this film is an adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's novel and highlights Occitan culture and language.

If you prefer more committed films, you can watch Lenga d'amor (2013), a documentary by Patrick Lavaud, which follows the journey of four mixed couples who chose to pass on Occitan to their children.

Music:

  • Lou Dalfin - an Occitan folk music group that mixes traditional instruments with modern influences.
  • Massilia Sound System - an Occitan music group that combines reggae and rap with Occitan lyrics.

Occitan music is very diverse and lively, mixing traditional and modern influences. You can listen to groups like Lo Cor de la Plana, Massilia Sound System or La Talvera, who sing in Occitan styles such as polyphonic singing, reggae or folk

Literature:

  • La Cançon de la crosada de Guillaume de Tudèle - This major work of medieval Occitan poetry tells the story of the Albigensian crusade.
  • Mirèio by Frédéric Mistral - This epic poem in the Occitan language tells the tragic love story between Mirèio and Vincent, two young Provençals.

To discover Occitan literature, and many other resources, you can check out the website Lo Congrès permanent de la lenga occitana (there's a French version, but you might as well start the immersion right away!) which offers a selection of authors and works in the Occitan language.

Occitan literature is ancient and prestigious, dating back to the Middle Ages with the troubadours who spread their lyrical poetry throughout Europe. You can read works like the Chanson de la croisade albigeoise, an epic and tragic account of the war waged by the kings of France against the Cathars of the Midi. You can also read "modern" authors like Frédéric Mistral, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904 for his work in Occitan, including his poem Mirèio.

You can also read contemporary authors such as Joan Bodon, Max Rouquette, or Bernat Manciet, who renewed Occitan literature in the 20th century with novels, short stories, or essays
